Georgia Museum of Art Athens

Located on the University of Georgia campus, the Georgia Museum of Art Athens is a Georgia attraction you don’t want to miss.  It is the official art museum of Georgia.  It is a great place to visit if you are an art connoisseur or if you’re interested in a little taste of culture.  Either way you can schedule a docent to show you around the different galleries.  These are specially trained volunteers who give museumgoers a more in depth look at the art forms on display.  They offer background information and a new appreciation for the works.

The Georgia Museum of Art Athens has a huge collection of paintings, works on paper, photographs and sculptures created by artists from all over the world.  The works cover several time periods in history as well as many different ethnic backgrounds.  When it first opened in 1948, the library was small enough to fit in the basement of one of the campus buildings.  Today, it has grown so much that it occupies its own space on the University of Georgia campus and now house close to 8,000 art forms. 

Once you’ve made your way through the Georgia Museum of Art Athens, visitors must take a peek inside the museum shop.  Here you will find a great selection of books, posters, jewelry, decorations and items for the kids, such as educational toys, books and music selections.  You’re sure to find some memento to commemorate your trip.

The museum website offers a full description of the collections on display.  In addition they have a calendar posted with their daily scheduled events, lectures, workshops and films.  All guests are invited to take part in any one of the many daily offerings.
