Georgia Museum of Art

The Georgia Museum of Art is located on the East Campus of the University of Georgia.  They are open everyday except Monday.  Not only is it an academic museum but it is also the official art museum of the state of Georgia.  Their collections include American paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries, American, European, and Asian works on paper, a collection of Italian Renaissance paintings and a collection of southern and Asian art.

The Georgia Museum of Art opened in 1948 and started out in the basement of a library on the university campus.  Since then it has grown by leaps and bounds.  Now it stands in its own facility of over 52,00 square feet and houses more than 8,000 objects.  The museum’s founder was Alfred Heber Holbrook, who donated much of the American paintings collection.  The museum’s collections show the study of the history of art and also have a broad range of exhibits that appeal to any art lover. 

The museum hosts a number of collections of works from all over the world.  They feature numerous paintings from America and Europe.  Throughout the year they also sponsor exhibitions celebrating particular artists and/or art forms.  The museum also offers lectures, classes, workshops, family events and daily events for its visitors.  You can visit their website for a complete listing of their activities.  If you’re planning a visit to the Georgia Museum of Art you might want to consider setting up a tour with a docent.  These are specially trained volunteers who lead tours of the museums galleries.  They provide a great deal of information and give visitors a new appreciation for art.
